On Friday, the Today show weather anchor, 68, shared a series of Instagram photos decorating his Christmas tree while at home with his wife, Deborah Roberts, 62, and their children — daughter Leila, 24, and son Nick, 20. For fans who are confused by the show’s fate, it seems safe to assume that the COVID-19 shutdowns likely had a lot to do with Home & Family ending. After all, unlike Hallmark’s other content that can be filmed ahead of time, Home & Family’s production could be shut down over and over again any time COVID waves came through. Failing that, Hallmark Channel execs could have felt like their daytime programming needed a refresh since Home & Family had dominated the channel’s daytime time slots for almost a decade. Debbie, who has been a co-host on the series since 2016, celebrated the announcement of the show's eighth season back in 2019 with an Instagram post.
On top of that, it seems like Matenopoulos is spending time with her family as she figures out her next move. The revived show's ninth season became its last, following cancellation by Hallmark Channel in March 2021. The final episode aired on August 4, 2021, with hosts Debbie Matenopoulos and Cameron Mathison. Following the announcement, hosts Debbie and Cameron both took to social media to share their sadness about the show's cancelation.

According to the Hallmark Channel’s schedule for the coming weeks, two reruns of “The Golden Girls” will fill the former “Home & Family” timeslot on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The channel has encores of Hallmark movies scheduled to air back-to-back in the late afternoons and evenings during the week. When it comes to Cameron Mathison, it didn’t take him long to recover from losing his Home & Family hosting job. After all, only twelve days after the final episode of Home & Family aired, Mathison joined the cast of the soap opera General Hospital and he has starred in the show ever since. After Home & Family aired reruns for three months, it was announced that the show would be returning with all-new episodes. However, even though new episodes of the show aired five days a week before production shut down, when it returned with new episodes, only three new Home & Family episodes were filmed each week.

In January, the show’s official Facebook pageanswered fans’ questions, sharing that they had to temporarily suspend production in order to comply with SAG/AFTRA. Unfortunately for everyone involved in television production, the vast majority of shows don’t last long assuming they even make it to the air, to begin with. In fact, there have even been some shows that were canceled after a single episode aired.
